Chan Marshall

cp

After dropping out of high school, she started performing under the name Cat Power while in Atlanta, backed by musicians Glen Thrasher, Marc Moore, and others.

Marshall’s live shows have been known for their unpolished nature, with songs beginning and ending abruptly or blending into one another without clear transitions. She has also cut short performances without explanation. On some occasions this has been put down to her suffering from stage fright and the influence of alcohol

The Phenomenal Handclap Band (15 to 20)

live performance

The Phenomenal Handclap Band is a tight-knit aggregation of musicians and artists from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. At the center of it is Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand who, after years of searching and contemplation, through live performance and the manipulation of recorded music, have finally succeeded in assembling the personification of their holy vision: a musical juggernaut comprised of Daniel, Sean, and their supremely talented friends Patrick Wood, Nicholas Movshon, Luke O’Malley, Laura Marin, Bing Ji Ling, Pier Pappalardo and Joan Tick.

The collective started when Collás and Marquand, two New York underground club DJs, became restless with the concept of playing other people’s music. Both had also been involved in the thriving nightlife scene, and had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of esoteric music ranging from Brazilian soul to vintage psych-rock, so becoming producers seemed to be the next logical step.

Micachu and The Shapes

micachu

Levi formed a band called The Shapes, which includes Raisa Khan on keyboards and Marc Pell on drums. They signed to Accidental Records who released their debut single “Lone Ranger” in May 2008, followed by “Golden Phone” in August 2008.
Their debut album Jewellery, produced by influential electronic musician Matthew Herbert, was released in March 2009 by Rough Trade Records[2].

Advance copies of Jewellery reached the press in early 2009, which generated positive reviews. In the wake of positive buzz, Micachu and the Shapes were immediately signed to Rough Trade.

Micachu and the Shapes toured widely throughout the UK in 2008, including performances at the Bestival and V Festival and her music has received critical acclaim in several national publications, including The Guardian, Dazed & Confused and Time Out. The band played abroad in South Africa and in the US at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City and SXSW in Austin, Texas. The band will be touring Europe and North America in the summer and fall of 2009[3].

Levi describes the music she performs with The Shapes as “pop”, although the music veers away from much of pop’s defining characteristics, including obvious choruses and accessible lyrics, and often makes use of unconventional playing styles and noises like bottles breaking or a vacuum cleaner.
